Kapiti Community White Ribbon Event, November 2006
The rising tide of violence on the Kapiti’s Nature Coast inspired a peaceful gathering involving members of the community.
Hundreds turned up to hold hands along Paraparaumu Beach despite the stormy weather. The dawn event featured bagpipers, Taiko Drummers, Kapa Haka and local Iwi representatives. Speakers included actor Temuera Morrison, Paul Curry from the Families Commission, Doug Fake from Kapiti Men for Non Violence and Mayor Alan Milne. More than 27 local organisations were involved, as were schools, local Iwi, churches and other community groups. It is hoped this will be an annual event with the aim of getting more people each year.
