• The Client

  The Kāpiti Coast District Council enables democratic local decision making to promote the social, economic, environmental and cultural wellbeing of the Kāpiti Coast.

• The Challenge

  We were commissioned to develop a district identity and boundary sign to represent the vibrant and diverse Kāpiti community and welcome visitors to the region. We came up with the concept incorporating Māori inspired design.

• The Solution

  To ensure the final design was unique and culturally appropriate we engaged with Kāpiti local Chris Gerretzen – a respected Māori carver and tutor at Te Wānanga-o-Raukawa in Ōtaki. By working together we developed a distinctive Kāpiti Island motif. Used in tandem with strong typography and a visual suggestion of coastline has resulted in a powerful identity, which espouses a confident and proud region. The new identity embraces Kāpiti’s multi-culturalism and speaks to the omnipresent and spiritual centre of the region – Kāpiti Island.
