Our gift from the land to you
In 2009 Mission Hall created Tohu’s new branding which included a corporate profile, wine labels, website, corporate stationery, cartons, bottle caps, press packs, and signage, working with suppliers from around New Zealand and attending press passes in Auckland to ensure quality and consistency.
They are the world’s first Maori owned wine company, providing a unique brand positioning and strong point of difference. The brand story is encapsulated in the company’s by-line “Our Gift from the Land – Nga Hua a te Whenua.” What the land has provided to the business in terms of premium quality wines is the vehicle to promote Maori culture to the rest of the world.
Through our research of the Tohu identity and the previous visual components, Mission Hall believed that the kowhaiwhai pattern held great promise and potential for development. It was elegant yet simple and could be portrayed in a refined and contemporary manner important for a highly competitive market. It linked well with the meaning of ‘Tohu’, had cultural significance to Tohu and could become an iconic mark moving forward.

The new brand, company profile, website, advertisements, stationery, and points of sale was an inspirational project that has already opened new markets and attracted more desirable distribution partners for Tohu Wines.
